ASEW

Autostar Emulator for Web Browsers

Free yourself. Control your telescope from anywhere.

The AUTOSTAR Emulator for Web Browsers (ASEW) is the modern replacement for failed/failing MEADEยฎ hand controllers. Powered by the ESP32-S3, ASEW connects directly to your telescope over RS-232 and transforms any device โ€” laptop, tablet, or smartphone โ€” into a wireless hand controller.

Whether youโ€™re at the eyepiece or across the yard, simply open your browser, connect over Wi-Fi, and enjoy full AUTOSTAR functionality in a clean, touch-friendly interface.

Why ASEW?

  • โœจ Free yourself from the cord โ€” no more being tethered to a coiled handbox.
  • ๐ŸŒ Works everywhere โ€” Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS โ€” if it has a browser, it works.
  • โšก Zero learning curve โ€” The interface mirrors the original AUTOSTAR hand controller, so you already know how to use it.
  • ๐Ÿ”Œ Plug-and-Play โ€” Powered by the ESP32-S3, with built-in Wi-Fi and a KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) setup philosophy.
  • ๐Ÿ“ก Always up-to-date โ€” Built-in OTA (Over-The-Air) firmware updates, so you can upgrade straight from your browser with no cables or special tools.

Compatibility

  • โœ… Full Replacement: Works seamlessly on mounts that use AUTOSTAR II or AUTOSTAR III (e.g., LX200, LX600, LX850, LS series).
  • โš ๏ธ Other Models: For scopes using AUTOSTAR 497 / AUDIOSTAR (LX90, LX85, ETX, LXD75, DS, etc.), ASEW may still provide remote control, but it cannot always replace the handbox since the RS-232 port lives on the controller itself.
  • KISS server automatically discovers the handbox model and updates the button labels accordingly.

Tested & Proven

ASEW has been successfully tested across multiple platforms and screen sizes, delivering a smooth, reliable, and portable telescope control experience.

๐Ÿ‘‰ In short: ASEW lets you free yourself from the hand controller โ€” and take full control of your telescope from any device, anywhere.

Work in Progress/Expanded Solution Offering

To offer a more comprehensive solution to our customer base and differentiate our products and services, we are adding support for the HBX protocol in addition to the existing RS232 implementation.

Users will now have the ability to configure their KISS server to use either the RS232 port or the HBX port (AUTOSTAR II/III) of their mounts. This single kit covers the majority of MEADE mounts with the two noted ports.
